COVID-19 RESPONSE

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Greater LA Education Foundation (Greater LA) quickly responded by coordinating community, business and philanthropic resources in support of the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) and LA County’s 80 school districts. Considering that conditions are everchanging, Greater LA’s response has evolved from bridging the digital divide and building capacity for LACOE and districts to effectively deliver online instruction to supporting districts through learning recovery and acceleration as they transition to reopen.

To date, with help from foundations, corporations and individual donors, Greater LA has invested over $4 million dollars to meet the most urgent needs of LA County schools and communities impacted by the pandemic.

Distributed 5K devices (WiFi hotspots, Amazon Fire tablets, noise cancelling headphones) to students in need

Trained individualsaceoss 20 districts to be online learning trainers, piloted a technical assistance line for teachers with support from Best Buy Foundation

Partnered with the California Community Foundation and LACOE to fund nearly $1.4M in grants as part of the Summer Learning Initative

Supported a partnership with the LA County Department of Mental Health, LACOE, and the LA Mayor’s Fund to provide $50k for emergency kits

Provided 2,500 books to our early childhood education partners and STEAM kits to middle school girls

Facilitated 3 webinar panels on educational equity, the high school student pandemic experience, and how philanthropy can support innovation and equity

Provided more than $50,000 in basic needs relief for food, clothes, and other critical supplies to families through the LA County network of community schools.

Sponsored dozens of educator-led initiatives through the Teacher of the Year Equitable Innovation Grant Program; highlighting creative ways to effectively support students through distance learning and successful reopening.

Our team will continue to coordinate philanthropic, private, and in-kind resources in support of Los Angeles students, families, and educators.
